St Illtud’s church in Llantwit Major is a remarkable place. A church was first set up here by St Illtud in AD520 when he created the first collegiate church and monastery.

It has often been called “the oldest university in the world”. Llanilltud Fawr became the centre of learning throughout Christian Britain.

The current church dates from the 13th century and is well worth a visit – inside there are several medieval Christian memorial stones in remarkable condition – there are two stone crosses and a pillar.

The area around the church is very attractive with narrow lanes, paths and streams.

Afterwards, a visit to one of the many old pubs nearby is recommended!
