Review – Patricks with Rooms, Mumbles

Last week we stayed in the excellent Patricks With Rooms in Mumbles.  Mumbles is one of our favourite seaside destinations in South Wales.

Patricks is an excellent hotel with a great restaurant. It’s located right on the main promenade only yards from the sea. The hotel has 16 individual bedrooms, the renowned restaurant and a relaxing bar area.  There’s also a small gym and weights room for residents.

Because it was a special occasion we decided to splash out and stay in one of the better rooms – 6b on the top floor of the Boathouse at the rear of the hotel. Each room is individually furnished and is viewable in advance on their website so you can decide which is best for you.  We decided on room 6b because of the opening veranda doors and the excellent view across the bay.  Some of the lower rooms and rooms in the main building have their view restricted by trees though all rooms are decorated and maintained to the same high standard.

The room was uniquely furnished, spacious and clean.  The selling point for me was the sofa that was positioned so you could relax with a good book whilst looking at the amazing view across Swansea Bay.

The room had it’s own wireless internet access point though it wasn’t obvious how to connect. I presume that you ask for a key at reception.

Note that the majority of rooms are not accessible via wheelchair though there are some rooms that are accessible by lift.

Rooms are priced from £115 to £175 per night per room (summer 2010 prices).

We dined in the restaurant and the meal was excellent.  I personally found the menu a little restricted – veggie options weren’t inspiring and it seemed strange having two similar beef options.  However, the food itself was very, very good.  The fact that the restaurant was packed on a Tuesday night whilst everwhere else in Mumbles was quiet speaks for itself.  There’s a good choice of wines.  Main courses were around the £19 mark.

Breakfast next morning was to the same high standard, and throughout our stay the staff were helpful, friendly and attentive.

Car parking is restricted within the hotel itself (there isn’t any) but there are good pay car-parks nearby, and normally it is possible to find a free parking space on the street near the hotel in the evening after all the day-trippers leave. I’d recommend leaving the car in a pay car-park during the day and moving it nearer the hotel later.  The hotel is also easily accessible by bus from Swansea.

Thoroughly recommended.
