Wales seems to be the favourite place for translation fails in road signs.
Last year Swansea made a big mess-up when it came to translation of English text into the Welsh language.
Now it’s Cardiff’s turn.
This roadsign was spotted in St Mary St. in the centre of Cardiff’s busy shopping area.
The BBC reports that the sign says “pedestrians look left” in English, but that the Welsh “cerddwyr edrychwch i’r dde” translates back as “pedestrians look right”.
Maybe trying to catch the tourists out? 🙂

The Cardiff Bay Wetlands Reserve is an area of piece and quiet right in the middle of Cardiff Bay. It was formed from the salt marshes and mud flats on the edge of the Bay in front of Windsor Esplanade after the bay was permanently flooded.
There was some concern that when the Cardiff Bay barrage was built that the wildlife would all leave but the Wetlands Reserve has proved to be a popular area.
Although totally man-made it has become a haven for birds in the Bay.
It also provides a quiet place to walk or cycle just away from the hustle and bustle of the Bay. read more

Gareth Mason from Barry was recently the star on the Graham Norton show. Even though he’s a “big lad” he does some amazing dancing to the James Bond theme.
There was also a local piece in the local Barry newspaper where Gareth praised his old school St Richard Gwyn in Barry and specifically his drama teacher Audrey Sparks. It’s really heartening to see a prospective South Wales star praising his old school and his teacher!
Go for it Gareth, and well done Mrs Sparks!!!!
Here’s Gareth’s appearance on Youtube –

Today we went to the South Wales Classic Car show in Pencoed. It’s an annual event run by the SWCCC. We were really surprised by how big an event this has become – it’s been running for over 20 years and this year had over 400 vehicles on display. With the fantastic weather we had today it was a great day out. read more

I’ve been busy setting up my new Cardiff Bay Restaurants website – http://www.cardiff-bay-restaurants.uk/.
It’s still a work in progress, as all websites are, but it’s well under way. There’s a lot of interest on where to eat in Cardiff Bay and it was clear that a specific site was needed. There are lots of sites listing Cardiff Bay restaurants, but it’s obvious that not many (if any) are based on up-to-date personal experience.
I work in the Bay and eat out quite a bit so a personal view of the best restaurants is quite easy to do.
Hope you find my new site useful.

Just a reminder that the next few weeks are a good time to visit “BlueBell Valley” at Castle-upon-Alun near Ewenny.
Well worth a visit on a nice sunny day.
See my previous post from last year for more information.

Good to see that Cardiff rocker Dave Edmunds is going to tour with Jools Holland this year.
Dave was popular in the 1970s with such hits as “Sabre Dance” and “I Hear You Knocking”.
See the BBC News item for more information.

We went to Rest Bay in Porthcawl yesterday. It’s a great beach with lots of clear sand when the tide is out. There’s also a large new carpark nearby so access is easy by car.
It’s only a 10 or 15 minute walk from the centre of Porthcawl so well worth a visit if you are looking for a slightly quieter beach.

Unfortunately the Blue Anchor Inn in East Aberthaw has caught fire again last weekend.
This is a great local pub with a huge amount of character. The building dates from 1380. It has caught fire a number of times in its history – a thatched roof and log fires don’t mix very well 🙂

So some strange goings on in Cardiff Bay as revealed by Google Street View. Street View has provoked some controversy and some interesting comments over privacy issues but at the end of the day it doesn’t actually show anything that isn’t publicly available to someone walking down the street on the day that the photos were taken.
However, it has shown up some really bizarre things going on in the streets, even in our own Cardiff Bay. The Street View snapshot above shows what appears to be a ghost in Cardiff Bay!!
Some people seem to think that it’s related to the wormhole situated in Cardiff Bay shown in Torchwood. I think it’s more likely somebody advertising the forthcoming Mary Poppins show in the Cardiff Bay Millennium Centre 🙂

A few months back we had a romantic weekend away at the excellent New House Country Hotel just north of Cardiff.
We fancied somewhere special and New House certainly lived up to that!
The hotel is situated on the hills just north of the city and has a spectacular view down over Cardiff and the Bristol Channel. read more
